One of the least known birding areas in Southern Ontario is the Carden Alvar. Located east of Lake Simcoe and recently identified as an Important Bird Area, the Alvar is home to many birds such as the Upland Sandpiper and Eastern Bluebird. Located near Kirkfield, the Alvar offers landscapes filled with birds, vast meadows of wildflowers, butterflies, mammals and the sounds of nature.

The Ontario Breeding Bird Atlas Project seeks to identify all birds that nest and raise their young in the province. By the second year of the five year project, more than 170 nesting species had been confirmed in our region.
