Trent-Severn Waterway

A number of boats on the Trent-Severn Waterway

One of Canada's most beautiful waterways, the Trent-Severn Waterway extends from the Bay of Quinte on Lake Ontario to Georgian Bay. The Trent-Severn is a worldfamous tourist destination, covering 240 miles (386 km) through an impressive chain of rivers and lakes linked by over 40 locks and excavated canals. Five locks, Bobcaygeon 32, Lindsay 33, Fenelon Falls 34, Rosedale 35, and Kirkfield 36 are part of the Trent-Severn national historic site and operated by Parks Canada.

For a safe, enjoyable journey Parks Canada provides navigation charts, lock through procedures, fees, mooring permits and marina facility guides. A lock station is a place to stop, stretch your legs, have a picnic and watch the passing flotillas of boats. Uniformed lock staff are pleased to answer questions or explain lock operations.

A particular point of interest is Kirkfield Lock #36. Limestone channels with cool cedarlined banks mark the approach to Kirkfield, a giant hydraulic lock looming abruptly from the surrounding farmland. Completed in 1907, and ranked second highest lock in the world and the highest point along the Trent-Severn, the Kirkfield Lift Lock offers a breath-taking view and self-guided tours.
