Reports to: Director of Care

Job Description:

  • Responsible for both professional nursing practice and nursing unit management;
  • Practices as a member of the multi-disciplinary team, under the standard of the Ministry of Health, the College of Nurses of Ontario, and the policies of the Home;
  • Maintains knowledge of and promotes in all aspects of resident care the Resident Bill of Rights;
  • Provides professional nursing care to residents;
  • Supervises, directs and assists the Registered Practical Nurses and Personal Support Workers;
  • Utilizes financial, physical, and personnel resources available in adapting and applying the nursing process to meet the needs of each individual resident's care;
  • Assists in developing, interpreting, and implementing philosophy, objectives, plans, policies and procedures for nursing services as they apply in the unit;
  • Liaises with Director of Care to ensure consistency of application of policy and standards with the Nursing Department;
  • Participates in creating an environment that is conducive to meeting the professional standards and to provide quality care;
  • Assists the Director of Care in scheduling and conducting in-service programs and developing new policy and education around meeting issues of legislative and professional compliance;
  • Coordinates and facilitates communication among the nursing staff, physician, pharmacy, other allied health professionals and life enrichment staff to ensure a multi-discipline approach to resident care issues;
  • Organizes, attends and conducts resident care conferences;
  • Assists with the development of the orientation program for new staff and performs probationary performance evaluations, develops a staff-mentoring program;
  • Participates in quality improvement and risk management, including leadership of initiatives as assigned; conducts ongoing audits for effectiveness;
  • Ensures that resident care planning, summaries and all relevant documentation is current and meets the needs of  the residents, professional standards and legislative requirements;
  • Assists in areas of drug compression on the units;
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Skills/Education Required

  • Post-secondary education in Gerontology and Unit Management;
  • Registration as a Registered Nurse with the College of Nurses of Ontario and in possession of a current Certificate of Competence;
  • Excellent research and report writing skills;
  • Proven leadership and team building ability to lead and motivate staff;
  • Effective oral communication and strong interpersonal skills to deal with members of the public, residents and staff;
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills;
  • Ability to deal tactfully with contentious situations and to exercise discretion, judgment, diplomacy and confidentiality;
  • Excellent organizational and administrative skills with an ability to work independently and in a team environment;
  • Must be able to work varying shifts and weekends.

Hours of Work

  • Shifts are subject to change;
  • Overtime may be required;
  • Weekend work is involved;
  • Must be willing to work day, evening and night shifts as assigned.
