Who are we?
In 2000, the Town of Lindsay became responsible for court scheduling, administration, enforcement and prosecutions of Provincial Offences Act (POA) charges. Upon amalgamation in January 2001, The City of Kawartha Lakes Court Services was created to provide those services to the City of Kawartha Lakes and County of Haliburton.
What does POA mean?
POA (Provincial Offences Act) governs how charges are processed and prosecuted. It applies to all provincial statutes as well as municipal by-laws and some minor federal contraventions. Most of the POA offences filed in our court fall under the Highway Traffic Act, the Compulsory Automobile Insurance Act, the Liquor Licence Act or the Trespass to Property Act. Most of those offences are minor and paid out-of-court.
Why do we have a collections unit?
"It's time to pay that FINE!"
Prior to 2000 a large percentage of unpaid fines were not enforced or collected by the Province, leaving millions of dollars of inherited lost revenue for the City of Kawartha Lakes and the Haliburton County. These unpaid fines have been forwarded to our Collections Unit. They are subject to additional fees and could result in one or more of the following: licence suspension, plate denial, credit reporting, garnisheed wages and personal property liens, and civil enforcement. Currently ALL defaulted fines are forwarded to the Collections Unit and collection activity begins immediately.
People with outstanding fines will receive an overdue notice with instructions on how to submit their payments. For more information, contact the City of Kawartha Lakes Court Services Collection Unit at 705-324-3962 ext. 2216.
