City urges safety around roadside snow piles

February 9, 2015 - The City is urging parents to ensure children are cautious around snowbanks.

In two separate incidents City snow plow operators have come across tunnels and snow forts being built into roadside snow piles.

If a child, or anyone, were inside when a City snow plow went by they could be buried or badly hurt.

The City is asking parents and guardians to be aware of where children are playing and to follow these simple tips:

  • Teach your children to stay behind the sidewalks when they see a snowplow coming. The heavy wet snow coming off the plow can be thrown some distance and could knock someone down who is standing nearby.
  • Never dig tunnels in a bank of snow near a road, or any place where a snowplow might come by and fill it.
  • Establish a buddy system with friends and have them look out for one another.
