November 3, 2009 - When the Olympic Flame arrives in Lindsay in just 6 weeks time, it will be proudly carried by Jack Prins, nominated as our community torchbearer to light the celebration cauldron for the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Torch Relay.

Jack, age 15, is a grade 11 student at Fenelon Falls Secondary School and is known for his tireless campaigning for cancer research and bone marrow awareness. Jack is also the spokesperson for the Sick Kids Foundation and has been featured in many of their brochures.

Jack is a cancer survivor, having battled with leukemia since he was 9 years old and who underwent a bone marrow transplant in 2007.

“We are proud to announce that Jack will be our final torchbearer in Kawartha Lakes for the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games,” said Mayor Ric McGee. “This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for Jack, who is one of 12,000 Canadians chosen to carry the Olympic Flame and one of only 189 torchbearers that will run the final 300 meters to a Celebration Site! On December 16th we want everyone in Kawartha Lakes to join together with other Canadians and show the world that we have the Olympic Spirit and that our people individually and collectively believe in the Olympic Motto, ‘Swifter, Higher, Stronger’."

To celebrate the arrival of the flame, the community is planning a celebration featuring local entertainment at Kent St. W. and Victoria Ave. beginning at 10:00am.

Midway through the two-hour celebration program, Jack will carry the Olympic Torch on its final 300 metres to the stage where he will light the 1.3-metre high celebration cauldron, in a move similar to the dramatic highlight of what will occur during the Opening Ceremony for the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games.

The 106-day Olympic Torch Relay, which is presented by Coca-Cola and RBC and supported by the Government of Canada, will visit more than 1,030 communities and places of interest in every province and territory. On February 12, 2010, the Olympic Flame will make its way to downtown Vancouver to light the Olympic Cauldron in a magical and awe-inspiring moment before a television audience of three billion people worldwide, signaling the kick off to the start of the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games.
