Kawartha Lakes implementing reduced speed school zone

February 17, 2016 - Effective February 29, a new 40 km/h School Speed Zone is being implemented on Kawartha Lakes Road 36.

The new reduced speed zone will be established approximately 120 feet south of the intersection of Kawartha Lakes Road 17 (Pigeon Lake Road) and Kawartha Lakes Road 36, to a point approximately 1,000 feet south on Kawartha Lakes Road 36.

“We are implementing this School Speed Zone to enhance safety for students traveling along the Kawartha Lakes Road 36 corridor on their way to and from school,” explained Technical Services Division Supervisor Michael Farquhar.

This school zone speed limit is enforced thru the Ontario Highway Traffic Act, section 128.(5) and under regulation 615 section 5 of the act.

Once installed later this month, the new School Speed Zone will be enforced under the Highway Traffic Act.

Later this year a second enhancement will be added with an all-way stop at the intersection of Road 36 and Weldon Road to assist students crossing the road safely during peak times as well as the operational functionality of the traffic intersection.

“Council has supported and endorsed our efforts to enhance student and traffic safety which these  new measures will allow,” said Mr. Farquhar.
