Kawartha Lakes release Housing and Homelessness 2014 annual report

May 19, 2015 - The City has released its 10 year Housing and Homelessness Plan 2014 annual report. Hope Lee, Manager of Housing, delivered the report and presentation to Kawartha Lakes Council Tuesday afternoon.

As service manager for Kawartha Lakes and Haliburton County, the City is responsible for the financial support of existing social housing and serves a key role in the delivery of new affordable housing programs.

“The Housing and Homelessness Plan is a result of extensive consultation and community input and reflects the local needs of the City of Kawartha Lakes and the County of Haliburton,” said Ms. Lee. “This annual report provides the public with an update on our progress and will help to ensure that our community remains informed.”

Kawartha Lakes Mayor Andy Letham said with the volume of households on waiting lists for a financially assisted unit significant ongoing collaboration with community groups and government partners is crucial.

“Our vision is to provide adequate, stable, affordable, well maintained and diverse housing choices with access to a variety of flexible supports enabling people to meet their housing needs throughout their lifetime,” said Mayor Letham.

Ms. Lee said she hopes people will take the time to read the background reports to understand the challenges and what the City is doing to address those challenges throughout the City and Haliburton.

“This report is based on a tremendous volume of community consultation and will help guide the direction we take over the course of the next decade to address housing and homelessness in Kawartha Lakes and Haliburton,” said Ms. Lee.

Mayor Letham applauded the work done to complete the first annual plan and noted producing the document will help keep the public informed and engaged.

“This is the first annual progress report on the City’s plan. It will inform the public on the measures that have been taken and the progress achieved to meet the objectives and targets,” said Mayor Letham. “It will also help to ensure that our community remains engaged in the Plan.”
