Kawartha Lakes reminds residents of responsible dog ownership by-law

August 18, 2016 - The City of Kawartha Lakes reminds all residents in Kawartha Lakes to be responsible dog owners.

Many Kawartha Lakes residents enjoy the companionship and sense of security associated with having one or more pets in their household. Along with the benefits of pet ownership come many responsibilities in terms of appropriate care and management of the animals. Not only do pet owners have a moral obligation to the animals in their care, they have legal duties as well.

As outlined in By-Law 2012-209,  every owner and other person who is in charge of a dog must pick-up and dispose of any excrement left by the pet on any property other than the property of the owner, including City-owned property, parks and public trails.

The by-law also advises that no owner shall cause or permit their dog to run at large.

Failure to comply with this by-law could result in fines of up to $500.00 and/or other legal action by the Municipality for repeat offences. This by-law may be enforced by any or all Municipal Law Enforcement Officers and Police Officers in the City of Kawartha Lakes.
