Public Library Launches Next-Generation Web Catalogue

March 2, 2015 - LINDSAY – The Kawartha Lakes Public Library is pleased to announce the official launch of its new website and online catalogue.

“This is a web catalogue for the 21st Century Library,” said Chief Librarian David Harvie. “Its integration with social medial allows the library to become a greater part of our patron’s digital lives.”

The new site includes dynamic graphics and search capability of the library’s extensive collection of over 240,000 items. A rotating widget on the home page displays newly acquired or on-order books, DVDs and books on CD.  Library patrons can easily place and manage their hold requests, and review due dates of checked out items, all from the comfort of their homes or from anywhere around the world.

The new catalogue allows searching of both the library’s print and digital collections in one search interface.  The library presently holds approximately 51,865 downloadable Overdrive e-books and 13,565 audiobooks.

“Over 37,000 e-books and audiobooks were downloaded last year, which comprised of almost 10 percent of our total annual circulation in 2014 and an increase of 18 percent over the previous year,” said Mr. Harvie. “We expect this trend to continue in 2015.”

The site also includes a calendar of the many library events and programmes. The calendar is searchable by branch location and audience. In addition, the library will be using Facebook @CKLPublicLibrary and Twitter @KawarthaLibrary to publicize upcoming events and items of interest.

The dynamic nature of the site allows the library to promote and highlight many of its free “deep web” resources. These include Chilton’s Auto Repair Guides, Mango Languages, Consumer Reports, Zino E-magazines, Gale Online Courses and Sesame Street Books, to name but a few.  All that is required for access is a valid Kawartha Lakes library card and PIN.

“Your public library continues to be a gateway to a wealth of resources on the Internet,” said Mr. Harvie.
