Public meetings taking place on the Vacant Unit Rebate Program

February 23, 2017 - City of Kawartha Lakes Council is considering eliminating the Vacant Unit Rebate Program for Commercial and Industrial properties. A staff report was presented to Council on February 21 which outlines the changes announced by the Province in the 2016 Ontario Economic Outlook and Fiscal Review and makes recommendations for reviewing the program. The program was initially implemented by the Province recognizing there was a shift in tax burden to the business property owner with the elimination of the Business Occupancy Tax in 1998.

Approximately 3% of the commercial and industrial properties are using the program annually with all property owners in the City funding the program. Since 2001, the cost to the municipality has been over $1 million.

The City is looking to engage local businesses on this issue and will host the following meetings:

Thursday March 2, 2017 at 4 - 6pm
