Speed bumps coming to Kawartha Lakes

July 29, 2015 - Following a resolution from Council in May, City staff will be installing removable speed cushions in three areas of Kawartha Lakes as part of a two-year pilot project.

Speed cushions are traffic calming measures that can be effective in reducing excessive speeding in residential areas.

As part of the pilot project speed cushions will be placed on William Street North, north of the intersection of Pottinger Street, Victoria Avenue North, north of the intersection of Pottinger Street in Lindsay and on Clifton Street, south of the intersection of Kennedy Drive in Fenelon Falls.

“City staff will be installing the removable speed cushions in early August,” said supervisor of technical services Mike Farquahar. “Signage will also be installed at the three locations to help bring awareness about these new traffic calming devices.”

The new speed cushions are removable, so staff will have the traffic calming devices removed in the late fall and re-installed in the early spring once the snow has cleared.

“Council felt there was a need to address speeding concerns on certain roads in Kawartha Lakes and as a result voted to support the installation of the speed cushions,” explained Kawartha Lakes Mayor Andy Letham. “The traffic calming measures have been approved for a two-year pilot project so we will see if they have the desired effect.”
