Students can be their own boss with Summer Company

April 25, 2016 - Applications are now being accepted for the 2016 Summer Company Program in Kawartha Lakes.

The Kawartha Lakes Small Business and Entrepreneurship Centre (KLSBEC) is available to help students register their business ideas and get started with their application.

Students will receive hands on business coaching and mentoring from local business leaders, and have the ability to apply for up to $3000 in funding that will enable them to operate their own business throughout the summer of 2016.  Students starting now will have the best chance for success at winning one of the 15 grants available to young entrepreneurs from the City of Kawartha Lakes.

Open to students ages 15 to 29, those interested in learning more about the program are encouraged to visit the Summer Company website at The application deadline is May 6.

“Many Summer Company participants continue to run their businesses after the program ends. For these young people, entrepreneurship becomes a life-long practice. They learn to be resourceful, dynamic and confident leaders in the community,” comments Diane Steven, Manager of KLSBEC.

The Summer Company Program has been available to students in Kawartha Lakes for the past 12 years, and in that time 115 young people have received training and support from mentors, while successfully launching new businesses in our community. The businesses created include a diverse range of categories from property maintenance and retail businesses to sports coaching, art lessons and more.

Summer Company is sponsored by the Province of Ontario and administered by the KLSBEC.
