Voters' list affected by unconfirmed citizenship
August 13, 2010 - Changes by the Municipal Property Assessment Corporation (MPAC) to municipal voters’ lists may mean you aren’t on the list.
“If MPAC does not have your confirmed citizenship on file you will not be considered an eligible elector and will not appear on the voters’ list in accordance with the Municipal Elections Act,” said Returning Officer Judy Currins.
Municipal Enumeration Forms were sent out by MPAC in May and June of this year to all affected property owners in an effort to confirm. Those with unconfirmed citizenship will not be on the voters’ list and will need to complete a form in September at City Hall or a Municipal Service Centre to confirm their citizenship and to be added to the list.
Changes to the voters’ list can be done between September 7th and 13th which will ensure voter kits are processed to be sent out with the original mailing. Changes can be made after September 13th but electors will get their voter’s kit later and will have less time to send in their vote.
“This change may affect people who have been on the voters’ list for many elections,” says Currins. “We encourage everyone to make sure they are on the list.”
