Help Emergency Responders find you

— filed under:

Whether you live in town or in a rural area, emergency responders are often faced with the challenge of finding an address with no time to spare. There are certain things you can do that will help your local Emergency Services find you as quickly as possible.

Here are some Tips to assist those responding to your emergency:

  • Ensure your HOUSE NUMBERS are of significant size and “stand out”.  Illuminated numbers are good.
  • In rural areas “911 NUMBERS” (your green number signs) need to be kept clear of branches, snow, dirt and debris.  Try to take note on a daily basis when you are approaching your driveway, if you can’t see it, neither can we.
  • If you have a FIRE HYDRANT near your property, help us out and keep it visible and accessible.  This time of year, snow accumulation can quickly make fire hydrants disappear.
  • Inside your house it is a good idea to have address or 911 NUMBERS POSTED BESIDE YOUR PHONE.  This will help anyone calling 911 from your house (visitors, children, etc.) to give an accurate confirmation as to your whereabouts.
  • In the event that 911 has been called, make sure your house lights are on, and that you’ve ensured your EMERGENCY ACCESS ROUTE IS CLEAR.  If possible, have someone stand outside or near the door to direct responders.
