How do I apply for rent-geared-to-income (RGI) or affordable housing assistance?

These are the steps that you must follow in order to apply for RGI or affordable housing assistance.

Step 1 – Obtain a standard application form for assistance from the Housing Department or at any of the Housing Provider locations.

Step 2 – Ensure that the standard application for assistance is complete. Read instructions carefully and if you have any questions or need assistance, please call or visit the Housing Department.

Step 3 – Ensure that the application and consent to disclose information for verification purpose are signed by each member of your household listed in the application form 16 years or older.

Step 4 – Submit your application form and all appropriate supporting documents to the Housing Department or any Housing Provider where your eligibility for RGI assistance will be assessed.

If you or a member of your household is a victim of domestic violence you may qualify for Special Priority.  Please complete our Request for Special Priority Forms.

If you or a member of your household requires support services to live independently you may qualify for our Special Needs Priority.  Please complete our Request for Special Needs Forms.

If you are eligible for assistance, you will be notified by the Housing Department within 30 days. When it is close to the time when you will be offered housing, you will be notified in writing by the applicable housing provider and you will be required to provide further updated information. Your application will also be reviewed annually for eligibility by the Housing Department.

We do need to verify your income to assess you for eligibility, so you will be required to provide copies of income verification documents, i.e. pay stubs, income tax documents, etc.

If your application is not completed properly, you will be notified within 7 business days.

REMEMBER:

  • The application form and the consent to disclose information for verification purposes must be signed by each member of your household 16 years of age or older.
  • If a member of your household is 16 years of age or older, and who is unable to sign the application and consent, please have his/her parent, guardian, attorney or authorized person sign the application and give the consent on his/her behalf.
  • The Housing Department determines eligibility for assistance based on a complete application only, which contains all required information and supporting documents, such as a Birth Certificate, income information, special forms, etc. Incomplete application forms with missing information or documents will not be considered for determination of your eligibility for assistance.
  • Personal information on your application form is collected, pursuant to the Social Housing Reform Act, 2000, sections 162, 163, 164 and 165 and the Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act, (R.S.O. 1990, c M. 56) and will be used to determine suitability and eligibility for housing and the appropriate rent scale and rent-geared-to-income charge.
