Frequently Asked Questions about Library Services

Get a Library Card and PIN

Anyone who resides in, pays taxes to, or goes to school in the City of Kawartha Lakes is eligible for a free library membership. Children under the age of 16 are required to have a parent or legal guardian co-sign their card.

In order to register for a card, go to your local branch and provide identification that includes your name and address. Cards are issued for immediate use. Persons who do not qualify for free membership have the option of purchasing a non-resident membership at the cost of $30.00 annually, or pro-rated to $2.50 per month.

Your PIN number is set to the last 4 digits of your library card number upon registration. You will need your PIN in order to access the My Account feature in the Library's online catalogue.

Replace my lost or stolen Library Card

Please notify the library immediately if your library card is lost or stolen so that we may prevent others from using it. The cost to replace a lost or stolen card is $3.00.

Renew Library material

It is fast and easy to renew your items through the online catalog.

  • go to My Account
  • select Renew my materials
  • enter your User ID (library card number)
  • enter your PIN (the last four digits of your library card number)
  • select List charged items
  • tick which items you would like to renew
  • select Renew selected items

Be sure to check to make sure that all materials were accepted for renewal.

Items may not be renewed if:

(a) there is a hold on the item,

(b) fines are owed on your account,

(c) the item is already overdue (so please remember to renew before your due date),

(d) the item has already been renewed twice, or

(e) your library account has expired.

Renewals may also be done by phoning or visiting your local branch library.

Please note that Interlibrary Loans (materials borrowed from libraries outside the City of Kawartha Lakes), are not renewable through the Library catalogue My Account feature. Please call the number on your due date slip to inquire about the possibility of renewing an Interlibrary Loan.

Place a hold or reserve Library material

You may place a hold:

(a) in person, at any branch,

(b) by telephoning your local branch, or

(c) online through the library catalogue.

To place a hold on an item online through the library catalogue, click on the words Place Hold and enter your User ID (library card number) and PIN (last 4 digits of your library card number) then select the most convenient branch for pick up  and select Place Hold. We will telephone you to let you know when the item is available for you to pick up.

Request an Interlibrary Loan

If the City of Kawartha Lakes Library does not have the material you want, we can request the item from another library.  To request material that we do not own, simply fill out an Interlibrary Loan Request form during your library visit or via the library web catalogue. The Web version of the form can be accessed by clicking on the words Request Material and then Interlibrary Loan. Please note that we cannot obtain new or current year titles through Interlibrary Loan.

Suggest a purchase

To suggest an addition to our library collections, log into your Library Account in the Library's catalogue and click on the request material link and then the suggest to order form. The form is sent to our collection development staff for consideration.

Reserve a public computer

Internet access, word processing, and scanning at the library are free, but you will need your library card number to reserve or sign in to a computer. It is not necessary to reserve a computer in advance; you may sign in at any available computer when you visit the library on a first come, first served basis.

Users under the age of 16 will need a parent/guardian to grant permission to use the Internet by completing a Public Internet Access Agreement.

Lindsay Library Public Computers - Reservations may be made up to a week in advance for the Lindsay branch library computers through the PC reservation terminal located in adult circulation services or alternately from the Library webpage by clicking on the link, Reserve a Computer.

Visitors to the City of Kawartha Lakes should request staff assistance to be signed in to an Internet computer as a guest.

Other Library Computers - Phone reservations are accepted at all branches, excluding Lindsay.  To book a computer, in advance, at any branch (excluding Lindsay), call your local Library.

The Library is unable to accept unsolicited resumés. All applications must be submitted as indicated on the job posting.

Volunteer at the Library

The Library is always looking for interested volunteers.

High school students may volunteer at their local Library and apply the time towards their community hours.

Adult volunteers are encouraged to check the Library Friends' section of the Library's website for opportunities in their community.  If your community Library does not have a Friends Group, perhaps you would like to start one.  Another suggestion is to create a Book Club or get involved in Library programs.  Contact your local branch for more information.

View Book Club Lists

A book club set is a set of 8 copies of the same book title that may be signed out to members of a book club. Book clubs who wish to reserve a book set may do so by contacting library staff.

It is not possible to view the list of book club sets or place a hold on a book club title through the online catalogue.  You may view the complete list of available book club sets here. Titles are signed out on an individual’s library card for a regular loan period on a first come first serve basis. Staff are happy to place a hold on your behalf should all the book club titles be out.
