Whether you grow it yourself or pick it up at the local farmers’ market, there’s something very special about fresh produce. The great abundance of local fruits and vegetables that are available at this time of year can motivate even the laziest of us to crack open a cookbook and contemplate the benefits of home cooking. Your local library has a whole smorgasbord of new cookbooks available. The library’s online catalogue can be found at http://www.city.kawarthalakes.on.ca/library and allows you to place a hold on any item you wish.

A little tomato sauce can enhance almost any dish.  “The Too Many Tomatoes Cookbook: Classic & Exotic Recipes From Around the World” by Brian Yarvin is the perfect book if your garden is overrun with tomatoes.   Follow these recipes and you’ll be sure that your tomatoes won’t go to waste as many of the recipes are easy to refrigerate or freeze.

“The Joy of Jams, Jellies and Other Sweet Preserves” by Linda Ziedrich will appeal to anyone with a sweet tooth.  The book provides 200 classic and contemporary recipes that showcase the flavours of fresh fruits.  It’s a terrific guide to modern home preserving and will allow you to experience the pleasures of summer’s bounty all year long.

“EatingWell In Season: The Farmers' Market Cookbook: A Simpler, Healthier Way to Cook” by Jessie Price is packed with easy, fast, and delicious recipes and will appeal to anyone who loves seasonal foods.  Produced by the American publisher of EatingWell Magazine, the book contains recipes that use simple, easy-to-find ingredients and most take 45 minutes or less to whip up.

“The Best of Relish Cookbook: Celebrating America's Love of Food” by Jill Melton is another cookbook that ties in with an American food magazine.  Relish magazine claims to have the largest circulation of any of the American monthly food magazines.  It will appeal to anyone interested in American regional dishes such as New Mexico’s posole, Texas sheet cake, California’s Cobb salad, and Pennsylvania’s shoo-fly pie.

Get the kids involved in meal preparation with help from Katherine Ibbs, author of “DK Children’s Cookbook”.  The publisher, DK Books, is recognized for its strong graphics and compelling designs.  The book focuses on favourite meals and snacks that will inspire young chefs and help them to learn new skills.
