Taxi Cabs and Limousines

The City’s Licensing Officer and the Municipal Law Enforcement Officers are responsible for licensing and regulating the taxicab and limousine industry in the City of Kawartha Lakes. There are 37 taxicabs and 6 limousines licensed to operate within the City. All licensed taxicabs are required to display a Taxicab Plate on the rear bumper.  Limousines are required to display a Taxicab Plate on the front sun visor.  The visible Taxicab Plate is your assurance that the vehicle has been inspected and approved in accordance with By-law 2005-40.

The following chart depicts all taxicab and limousine companies licensed to operate within the City of Kawartha Lakes and the number and types of vehicles inspected and approved in accordance with By-law 2005-40.

If a taxi or limousine company that is not listed above is operating in the City of Kawartha Lakes it is operating in contravention of the By-Law and should be reported to the Municipal Law Enforcement Office by calling (705) 324-9411 ext. 1212. Unlicenced companies may taxisign.jpgnot have passed an acceptable criminal record search, may not have proper liability insurance or could be operating unsafe vehicles.

Taxi-cab Inspections

Each licensed taxi-cab is inspected at least 2 times a year and the meter is inspected annually for accuracy. Taxi-cabs are required to be clean, in good repair and mechanically safe. Once a taxi-cab meter has been tested and determined to be operating accurately, the meter is sealed to prevent tampering. When an inspection takes place the Ministry of Transportation – Enforcement Officers and the Ministry of the Environment – Sector Compliance Branch often participate to ensure compliance with vehicle safety standards and to ensure vehicles meet acceptable smog emissions.

Taxi-cab Drivers

All drivers providing a taxi-cab service within the City of Kawartha Lakes are required to be licensed. As part of the licensing process both a police and a driving record check is carried out. Licensed taxi-cab drivers are required to post their licence in a visible place. The licence contains their picture, their first name and their taxi-cab licence number.

By-law 2005-40 regulates the fares with a start rate of $3.25 plus 22.5¢ per each additional 100 metres ($2.25 per kilometre). Senior’s Rate (65 years of age or over) is $3.25 start rate plus 20.5¢ per each additional 100 metres ($2.05 per kilometre). Taxicab Waiting Rate is $32.00 per hour (53¢ per minute). Limousine Fare is $100.00 per whole or part hour with a minimum charge of $200.00. All Trips to Toronto International Airport are charged at a rate of $200.00 via a taxicab and $275.00 via a limousine. Airport Parking Fees for a Taxicab are $10.00 and for a limousine is $20.00. (Destination Surcharge Rates may be added where applicable – example: if you live in Norland and want to travel to Coboconk there will be an added surcharge for a taxi coming from outside of the zone within the City of Kawartha Lakes).
