Why was it left behind?
Is It Out on Time?
Curbside set out time is 7:00 a.m. (6:00 a.m. in some downtown cores). The truck may not always come at the same time every week.
What Size Is It?
- 2 bag weekly limit.
- 40 lbs or 18 kg per bag.
Over-sized bags count as two bags of garbage. Additional pre-paid bag tags are available at all City Municipal Service Centres.
Is it clearly marked?
If using a permanent collection box, ensure it is clearly marked when there are items to be collected. Label the containers garbage or recycling with a waterproof marker or spray paint.
Is it Contained?
You are responsible for your garbage and recycling until it is collected. To keep animals out of your garbage place material out in a rigid container or a garbage box.
Please do not spray bags with bleach or cayenne pepper to deter animals; it is a safety hazard to our collectors.
Is it "Curbside" Garbage?
Hazardous waste will not be collected. It must be taken to a Household Hazardous Waste Depot.
Construction materials will not be collected. Construction/Demolition (wood, drywall, carpet, tiles, etc.) waste must be brought to your local waste management facility (landfill).
Is it Visible?
Make sure that your garbage and recycle boxes are not in the path of the snow plow, but are still visible from the road. The best visible and accessible location is the centre of your driveway.
White or clear bags are very difficult for the drivers to see against the snow. Please use black or green bags during the winter season.
When using Tags
Make sure to wrap the tag around the neck of the bag and stick the ends together to form a 'flag'.
If using containers, attach the tag to the top of the garbage in the container.
Private / Seasonal and Unassumed Roads
Unsafe road conditions are a safety concern for the contractor and residents. If you live on a private, seasonal or unassumed road, you will receive curbside service as long as your road is accessible by a collection vehicle and maintained to the following standards:
- Snow plowed to a minimum of 10 feet or 3 metres wide.
- Sand and salt applied as required.
- Vegetation cut back to 10 feet or 3 metres high and wide.
- Potholes filled and graded as required.
Residents living on private, seasonal or unassumed roads are responsible for arranging road maintenance. Garbage and recycling must be set no more than 7 feet or 2.2 metres from the road.
