The health care system continues to move forward with in-home treatment of patients. As a result, medical treatment in the home may cause extra waste to be produced. There have been a number of occasions in the past when extra bags of waste have been set out at the curb for collection because of the in-home treatment.

When bags of waste are placed at the curb in excess of the two bag limit without City garbage bag tags, the waste collector’s are obliged to leave them behind. This may cause upset for the resident under care and/or for the resident’s family when recovery and rest should be paramount.

Effective June 9, 2009, Section 4 and Schedule ‘E’ of By-Law 2007-024 have been amended (2009-124) with regards to dealing with the collection, removal and disposal of solid waste within the City of Kawartha Lakes. Therefore, Solid Waste Services is prepared to offer residents who find themselves in this type of situation, a supply of garbage bag tags at no charge, to manage the extra waste produced due to in-home treatment.

The City has created a ‘Medical Waste Register’ for residents and medical professionals. The purpose of this register is to confirm that indeed in-home treatment is taking place and extra waste may be produced as a result. It should be noted this program will only address the needs of residents undergoing medical treatment.

Large families and other individuals and/or businesses who cannot meet set out limits will not be eligible for this program.
