Household Hazardous Waste (HHW)

There is no charge to drop off your household hazardous waste. Make sure materials are transported in labeled and well sealed containers.

Residential hazardous waste is usually labeled as corrosive, explosive, poison or flammable.

Depot Locations

The City Household Hazardous Waste depots are open during regular landfill hours of operation and are located at:

Fenelon Depot - 341 Mark Road

Lindsay Depot - 51 Wilson Road

City Hazardous Waste depots are for residential waste only.

Industrial and Commercial waste will not be accepted.  Please contact an approved liquid and hazardous waste contractor for disposal. Find out how to manage your businesses hazardous waste materials.

Handle with Care

  • Always wear gloves when handling household hazardous waste
  • Avoid mixing chemicals by keeping them in separate containers
  • Label all household hazardous waste that you bring to City depots.  Unlabelled or questionable products could be refused
  • Wrap fragile items in newspaper to prevent breaking
  • Avoid exposing household hazardous waste to heat or direct sunlight

Accepted Household Hazardous Waste includes:

Automotive Products including antifreeze, autobody filter, automobile batteries- lead acid, brake fluid, carburetor cleaner, car wax with solvent, chrome polish, engine degreaser, fuel additives, gasoline in ULC approved container, oil filters, transmission fluid, used motor oil and waster fluid.

Household Products including aerosol products, all-purpose cleaners, ammonia, disinfectants, bleach, floor wax strippers, furniture polish and wax, metal cleaners, oven cleaners, rust remover, shoe polish (liquid), spot and stain remover, upholstery and rug cleaners, lighter fluid, muriatic fluid, window cleaners, drain, tub and toilet cleaners, smoke detectors, swimming pool and spa/ hot tub chemicals and fire extinguishers.

Batteries including single use and rechargeable batteries.

Note: Drop-off boxes for AAA, AA, C, D, 9 volt and button batteries only are located at all Municipal Service Centres, local libraries and City Hall.

Hobby Supplies including chemistry sets, photography chemicals and liquid glues.

Empty Tanks and Containers including kerosene containers, pesticide containers and pressurized gas tanks.

Paints and Solvents including acetone, empty containers, latex and oil paints, marine paint, paint thinner and strippers, spray paint, varnish or lacquer and other solvents.

Mercury-Containing Products including metal halide lamps, thermometers, thermostats, ultraviolet lamps and fluorescent tubes and bulbs (CFLs).

Gardening and Pest Control including all fungicides, herbicides and insecticides, chemical fertilizers, flea/ tick pet products, rat poison and wood preservatives.

Personal Care Products including hair dye, hairspray, hydrogen peroxide, jewelry cleaner, nail polish and remover, perm lotion or solution and rubbing alcohol.
